And with today's current  economic climate, your pocket is definitely were your money belongs.

IGNORE THE DETAIL AT YOUR PERIL
Most consumers tend to judge how competitive a supplier is by their monthly direct debit amount.
In many cases this can be false economy due to the peaks and troughs of consumption and estimated bills.
EXAMPLE: your direct debit may be low because your supplier has over estimated and you have built up a huge credit on your account. And instead of your supplier refunding your money they drastically reduce your direct debit amount to clear the credit.

You may think you are getting a good deal on your monthly amount, but you could still be paying anything up to 25% MORE on your unit prices... FACT!!

The only way to check your current supplier on price is to:

This isn't as painful as it sounds by the way. Your bill may look confusing but I'll explain a couple of things to clear the muddy water.

Two Tier Pricing
Most companies charge two prices, tier1 and tier2. (the name for this may vary) This method is basically disguising the standing charge we all use to pay.
Tier1 is higher and is charged for a set number of units over the year (this number can differ from one supplier to the next)
Tier2 is a lower unit price and is charged for the rest of your energy consumed over the year.

Standing Charge Pricing
Some companies still use the traditional method with one set unit price for all the energy you use and a daily standing charge. I personally prefer this method for its transparency and ease of working out.

Choosing The Right Method
Some companies offer you the choice: two tier or standing charge.
Don't worry, there is absolutely no difference. If you worked the same annual bill for the same supplier using both methods, they would be virtually identical.
